Message from the Dean                                                   

Welcome to the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSS&H) at Wachemo University. We are among the third generation Universities in Ethiopia who are exhibiting a great progress in different aspects of academic fields and community services. We are also proud to offer different degree programs in social sciences and Humanities that help you to advance the abilities in varied fields.

College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSS&H) is one of the oldest Colleges by which the University assured its establishment in 2004EC/2011GC with the aim of producing students who understand the Society and the individuals’ relationship with in the society using multiple methodologies. The College is located in the main campus of WCU.

Our College of Social Sciences and Humanities is offering different courses and tangible community service under various fields of studies. To mention the fields of study found in our college are Geography and Environmental Studies, English Language and Literature, Sociology, Psychology, Civics and Ethical Studies, Hadiya Language and Literature, and History and Heritage Management. These departments help you to develop skills in various areas associated with the relationship of humans with environment, writing and critical thinking skills, relationship of individuals in society, the study of behavior and mind, rights and duties of citizens and the totality of human past.

The college is strongly committed in providing quality education and a great deal of work is being done on research and community Services. Indigenous languages documentation has been started, and as of today more than six Ethiopian languages has been documented. The book: “Speak with Hearts of Hadiyya” is under the process of printing. In addition to this, the map of the tourist sits found in the university catchment area have been sketched and documented. Furthermore, it is our college that provides life skills trainings for first year students so that they can cop up with the new environment. Not only this, it is in our college that you could find sustainably hot and active language improvement center (ELIC) where induction trainings are delivered. As a college of Social Sciences and Humanities, the college is offering the aforementioned services to students, campus community, and the surrounding area.

Students graduating from our college will easily get into successful professions. The academicians and staff members of our college are deeply committed to offer quality education that allows to develop critical thinking and skills that will deliver an opportunity in their job. At present our college has enrolled 1114 regular students of which 459 are males and 655 are females and 146 are advance standing students. We have also summer students of which 608 are males and 385 female students. In addition we have weekend students of which 238 are males and 109 are female students. 

I am thrilled to represent this forthcoming college which is dedicated to provide quality education, produce qualified manpower, conduct problem solving researches and community services. I hope you will browse our website and explore our departments.

Values

Historical Background

The College of Social Sciences and humanities was instituted in 2011 G.C. with the establishment of Wachemo University by the Regulation No. 222/2011 of the Council of Ministers of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. In the first year of the establishment of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities launched by opening up Geography and Environmental Studies and English Language and Literature departments. In 2012 G.C the college has advanced its admission capacity by commencing an additional program called Sociology.

Then the College in 2013 G.C had launched a Sociology department and in 2014 G.C Hadiyisa Language and Literature. Therefore, the college has grown its number of departments to five.

The department of Civics and Ethical Studies was emerged in 2015 G.C and History and Heritage Management also launched in 2016 G.C after it was accepted by the Academic Council and the Senate of the University.

College Administration

Institutional structure of the college constitutes academic wing which are accountable to the dean of the college. The academic commission, comprises the dean heads and coordinators of the different units in the college, is directly involved for decision making when required through their regular meeting.
