Department of Mathematics

Message from the Department Head

Department of Mathematics was launched in 2011 along with other academic majors in the Faculty of Natural and Computational Sciences and is now named the College of Natural and Computational Sciences. The department started its task by enrolling students with 9 instructors in the academic year of 2011 G.C., which indicates that the department is one of the oldest departments in Wachemo University. Now, there are 31 instructors and one secretary in the department. Among 31 instructors, 16 instructors are at work, whereas 15 instructors are attending their BSc and PhD programs at different universities in Ethiopia and abroad. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Master of Education in Mathematics. Currently, in the department, there are undergraduates with a specialization in Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and postgraduates with a specialization of Master of Education in Mathematics students attending their study in the regular program. The department also has students in extension programs on weekends for postgraduate with a specialization in Master of Education in Mathematics and summer for undergraduate programs. The department is also ready to launch other Master's programs with various specializations. The department will be full of human resources with different specializations in the next couple of years, and we plan to launch a Ph.D. Program in 2017-2018 G.C.

Mathematics illuminates the beautiful and astonishing hidden structures of the universe on which the world of science operates, through which technologies function, from which social sciences can be modeled, and with which the humanities and fine arts interact. In particular, the department aims to provide mathematics majors with skills that will help students transition to careers involving mathematics. Students should develop strong critical thinking skills, analytical skills, and problem-solving tactics. Students will also hone oral and written communication skills and gain exposure to technology tools, for example, technologies such as Mathematica, MATLAB, Pythons, Latex, and GeoGebra.

To this end, the department has a lot of roles in accordance with the vision and mission of Wachemo University in establishing quality education and taking up scientific research programs in the university. It also serves all university students who enter as freshmen, all technology students, and other departments found in the university.

Therefore, I am excited to represent this forthcoming department, which is dedicated to providing quality education, producing qualified manpower, developing strong critical thinking and analytical skills, equipping with technology, conducting problem-solving research, strong technical skills, and high-level expertise with which to excel in future professional endeavors, view the world with a mathematical lens, maintain a thirst for lifelong mathematical inquiry, and community services. Lastly, I hope everybody will give constructive ideas for the department in different directions. Please visit our website and call us.

We do for changes!

Many Thanks!
