Message from the Department Head
Department of Statistics was launched in 2013 G.C. along with other academic majors in the College of Natural and Computational Science. The Department started its task by enrolling 42 students and 5 instructors in the academic year. Now, there are 21 instructors, 1 administrative staff, and 3 lab technicians (STA) in the Department. Among 21 instructors, 14 instructors are at work, whereas 7 instructors are attending their PhD programs at different universities in Ethiopia and abroad. Currently, in the Department, 76 students are attending their study in various programs. Among these, 69 students are attending regular programs, both undergraduate (57) and postgraduate (12), and 7 students are in an extension program on weekends in the postgraduate program.
The curriculum in the Statistics program has been prepared to guide students through well-established academic courses to produce efficient and productive citizens in the future. The undergraduate program introduces students to the full breadth of independent thinking and self-expression in oral and written modes of Statistical Methods. The ultimate goal of Postgraduate is also to help students to be critical thinkers and researchers in the area. Outstanding students are offered to work as teaching assistants in the Department.
The Department has many roles in accordance with the vision and mission of Wachemo University in establishing quality education and taking up scientific research programs in the university. It also serves almost all university students who joined different specializations or Department is required to take 3 or 4 credits of Statistics course as a common course, which is taught in accordance with their ability to undertake different research activities.
Therefore, I am delighted to represent this forthcoming Department, which is dedicated to providing quality education, producing qualified manpower, conducting problem-solving research, and providing community services.
