Overview of Computer Science Department

In Wachemo University Computer Science department was started as one of the department under the faculty of Engineering and Technology since 2012/13. The department was started with only two BSc Staff members from Information Technology background and with 50 students. During the beginning Computer Science and Information Technology department was merged together because of lack of human power.

Computer Science department become an independent department under the faculty of Engineering and Technology after the decision of the university senate which is held on 16/02/2014. Currently computer science department is placed under school of Computing and Informatics, of Engineering and Technology College.

During the beginning the department have BSc program in regular only. Currently the department have BSc program in weekend and Evening. In addition the department is in progress to launch an MSc Program in regular and weekend during 2019/20.

Number of computer laboratory is increased to four, each laboratory having more than 50 computers. Each laboratory is equipped with internet connection and other infrastructure which is convenient to teaching- learning. All the laboratories are used to conduct a practical works of the computer science courses of computer science department only. The department is on the progress to establish additional and special laboratories which can consist of special devices used for conducting different experiments and researches.

Computer Science department has been providing other introductory and some advanced courses for other departments. For such courses the laboratory will be conducted on the computer laboratories established under each college.

During the second semester of the 2019 academic year, there are 385 students in regular undergraduate degree program, 88 students in weekend undergraduate degree program and 53 students in Evening undergraduate degree program.

The department is becoming strong in human power from time to time. Currently, computer Science department have 31 staff members (25 local staffs and 6 expatriates). The ratio of female staff in the department is, 7 female and 24 male staff members. The department have four PhD holders (2 Associate Professors and 2 Assistant Professors), 18 MSc holders (1 Assistant Professor and 17 lecturers), the remaining staff members are on the study leave inside Ethiopia and abroad, except one staff member. In addition the department have 4 technical assistants.

The department is also planning to develop human power with academic rank and experience of skill.

The department is conducting research works and community service. Currently the department is strongly working in coordination with research and community service offices. The department have provided community service for different governmental organizations and schools in basics skill of computer. The department have also provided a service for the university student during the summer break in different software development environments.

Currently the department is running two research works and several projects to make shine the department and the university to the globe. Lastly, the department is strongly working to make the Wachemo University a home of brilliant.
