ℹ️ Department Profile

Anesthesia is a medical specialty dedicated to ensuring patient safety and comfort before, during, and after surgical and diagnostic procedures. It involves the controlled and temporary loss of sensation or consciousness through the administration of anesthetic agents while providing analgesia (pain relief), amnesia (loss of memory), muscle relaxation, and continuous monitoring of vital functions. As both a science and an art, anesthesia requires sound clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and rapid decision-making. Beyond the operating room, anesthetists play a vital role in critical care, emergency medicine, pain management, and resuscitation. Graduates of the anesthesia program are equipped to provide safe perioperative anesthesia care, manage critically ill patients in emergency departments and intensive care units (ICUs), and deliver comprehensive surgical and non-surgical pain management services.

The Department of Anesthesia was established in 2015 G.C. under the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) at Wachemo University with the primary mission of addressing the national shortage of qualified anesthesia professionals and producing competent, ethical, and compassionate anesthetists capable of serving diverse healthcare settings. Since its establishment, the department has successfully graduated nine batches of Bachelor of Science (BSc) anesthesia professionals, including three batches of students temporarily transferred from Aksum University during the conflict in northern Ethiopia. These graduates are currently serving in hospitals and healthcare institutions across the country, contributing significantly to the improvement of surgical, emergency, and critical care services.

Currently, the department has a vibrant academic community consisting of more than 88 undergraduate students enrolled across five years of study. Student enrollment includes 28 first-year students, 18 second-year students, 11 third-year students, 18 fourth-year students, and 33 internship students. The department is staffed by 21 committed academic personnel, including 16 faculty members with MSc qualifications, one BSc instructor, 1 TA, and four faculty members pursuing MSc studies. Our academic staff actively engage in teaching, clinical service, research, community service, and professional development, ensuring high-quality education and mentorship for our students.

Clinical education is primarily conducted at WCU, CMHS, Nigist Eleni Mohammed Memorial Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, the university's major teaching hospital, which provides students with extensive hands-on experience through a high patient volume and a wide range of surgical specialties. These include General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Obstetric and Gynecologic surgery, Orthopedic and Trauma surgery, Ophthalmic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Emergency surgery. Students also rotate through adult and pediatric Intensive Care Units, the emergency department, anesthesia referal clinics, post-anesthesia care units, and various inpatient wards, enabling them to develop the competencies required for comprehensive perioperative and critical care practice.

The Department of Anesthesia is committed to producing highly competent, compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered anesthesia professionals who provide safe perioperative care, effectively manage critically ill patients, deliver high-quality pain management services, and contribute to improving healthcare through research. Todate, the department's faculty members have collectively published more than 50 research articles in reputable national and international peer-reviewed journals innovation, and community engagement. Our dedicated and experienced faculty fosters a supportive learning environment that emphasizes professionalism, evidence-based practice, teamwork, lifelong learning, and respect for patients and colleagues.

Students joining the Department of Anesthesia embark on an exciting and rewarding four-and-a-half-year educational journey that combines rigorous classroom instruction, simulation-based learning, laboratory practice, extensive clinical rotations, research activities, and a semester-long supervised internship. Upon graduation, they are well prepared to meet national and international standards of anesthesia practice and to make meaningful contributions to improving surgical and critical care services in Ethiopia and beyond.
