Message from the Head, Department of Comprehensive Nursing

Comprehensive Nursing is dedicated to ensure patient care for all age groups both in health facility and in community settings. As its name indicates Comprehensive Nursing, it consists of four main areas of patient care namely; Medical, Surgical, Maternity, and pediatrics aspects. The Comprehensive Nursing program prepares its graduates to work competently in Out Patient Department (OPD), Emergency Unit, Medical Ward, Surgical Ward, Operation Room, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT), Pediatrics Ward, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI), and Maternity Units. In addition, the Comprehensive Nursing graduates work as an academician, a researcher, private employee (opening their own clinic), Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), and health office worker at various health system levels. The profession Comprehensive Nursing is an international profession, which is not limited by boundary and territory.

Comprehensive Nursing Department at Wachemo University was officially commenced in 2012 with its former name Nursing. However, its name was changed to the current name, Comprehensive Nursing in 2018. Since its commencement, the department has successfully graduated nine batches of Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree Comprehensive Nurses. Currently, the department has a vibrant academic community consisting of more than 215 active undergraduate students. Student enrollment includes 48 first-year students, 51 second-year students, 60 third-year students, and 56 fourth-year students. The department is staffed by 28 committed academic personnel with more than five specialities. All courses are taught by an instructor, who is specialized in the course.

The theory class and skill lab demonstration are delivered at Wachemo University, Main Campus. Wachemo University Nigist Eleni Mohammed Memorial Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and other hospitals in Central Ethiopia Region are sites for clinical and practical education. In addition to its instructional programs, the department offers community services and conducts research for patient care in health facilities and community with the ultimate goal of expanding Ethiopia's prosperity by enhancing personal and community health. The government, private and non-governmental organizations witness the competency of our graduates in their organizations.
