Sanitation and water supply sub team

Background

The project Area, Hosanna Town, is located at the North West of SNNPR, Ethiopia. It has a population of about 104,000 with an area of about 5000ha. The Water Supply and sanitation situation of the town is worsening from day to day due to the development of the city. There has to be external intervention and support to improve the leaving condition of the residents in the town in addition to the government activity regarding to the sanitation. This concept note is prepared to give some insight about the existing situation of the city’s waste status and to encourage donors plus international collaborators on sanitation.

To solve sanitation problems, plans have to be made strategically as a first step in order to synchronize fragmented efforts by different stakeholders. Strategically sanitation is a set of chosen short, medium and long term activities to support the achievement of sustainable development goals and implement policies. Plans should be based on the existing situation and respond to actual rather than assumed problems. It should address any problems with the management of existing sanitation problems and should be flexible, allowing for later activities to be amended in the light of feedback from earlier activities.

The strategic sanitation plan envisioned to address sanitation of the town in such a way that to combine several strategically approaches which will help better way to manage excreta, solid waste and grey water from household, industrial, and communal sites. Furthermore, the strategic plan is intended to help combine the efforts of different institutions in a concerted manner and avoid redundancies and save resources. The approach also seeks to integrate health, environment, economic, social and technical factors that have an impact on the sustainability of service provision. This proposal is prepared in order to develop technical methodology and financial estimate for detail planning of short (5 year), medium (10 year), and long term (20 year) strategic years.
